All About Anti-Mullerian Hormone(AMH)

AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) is an important marker of a woman’s reproductive health and provides a valuable information about her fertility potential. In this blog, let’s explore what AMH is, its role in the body and its importance in assessing fertility.

What is AMH?

Anti-Mullerian Hormone, produced by the ovaries, is a glycoprotein that played an important role in the early stages of ovarian follicle development. AMH is relatively stable throughout the menstrual cycle, making it a reliable marker to assess ovarian reserve.

What is Ovarian Reserve?

Ovarian Reserve refers to the quantity and quality of a woman’s eggs. AMH levels are directly correlated with ovarian reserve. As a woman ages, the ovarian reserve declines and AMH levels tend to decrease

How is AMH measured?

AMH is measured by a simple blood test. Since AMH levels  are relatively stable throughout the menstrual cyle, this test can be performed on any day of the menstrual cycle.

 How to Interpret AMH Results?

Normal blood levels of AMH are between 1.5-4.0ng/ml. High AMH levels of >4.0ng/mL Con be seen in 2 conditions

1)Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

2)Certain Ovarian Tumours like Granular Cell Tumours: Monitoring AMH levels in such patients is helpful. In identifying the response to treatment Low AMH levels of <1.5ng/ml indicates diminished Ovarian removal seen in advanced age. Premature Ovarian failure (POF).

Factors Influencing AMH Levels :-

1)AGE: Age is the main factor which influences AMH levels. As a woman ages, her ovarian reserve diminishes and AMH levels decrease.

2) Lifestyle Factors: Certain lifestyle factors like smoking and obesity may impact AMH levels. Smoking is associated with lower AMH levels, while obesity leads to hormonal imbalances which adversely affect the ovarian function

3) Other Factors: H/o Ovarian Surgery, Chemotherapy, Oral Contraceptive Pills, Vitamin D deficiency affect AMH levels.

In conclusion, AMH levels remain a valuable tool in assessing fertility and a crucial marker for achieving a healthy pregnancy.
